For the 2017-2018 academic year, Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) has chosen to partner with four schools on Long Island to enrich students in scientific computing. Scientific computing involves writing code to solve real world science problems. Up to Thirty (30) Sayville students from grades 9-12 can be selected to learn the core scientific computing skills. The Program will take place at the High School each Thursday from 3-4pm in Room 204 and will be taught by Dr. David Biersach from BNL and chaperoned by Mr. Rick Caskey. This program is provided at no charge to the school or students courtesy of Brookhaven National Laboratory. The sessions will begin on Thursday October 5th, 2017
During these seminars, students will be introduced to the Linux operating system running on computers fully managed by BNL that are hosted in Amazon’s cloud. Students will learn how to program computers using the C++ computer language with Code::Blocks, an open-source development environment. Linux and C++ are the tools used by the vast majority of scientists working for the US Department of Energy.
Each student will get their own private remote virtual
machine (VM) with all the development software and courseware
preinstalled. They will access these
secure PCs using a unique username/password.
Each VM will have its own public IP address that allows the students to
access their remote desktops while onsite in the Sayville computer lab as well
as when they are at home. Note: if their
home computer is a Macintosh there is a free remote desktop client published by
Microsoft that is available online from the Apple App Store which will allow
the student to connect to their assigned Amazon VM. If their home computer is a Microsoft-based
PC, the remote desktop connection application is already built into Windows.
Students who participate in this program with at least an
80% attendance record will receive a formal certificate in the closing session
from BNL indicating their successful completion the BNL “Foundations of
Scientific Computing” workshop.
Obtaining this certificate is very helpful for students interested in
competing for follow-on summer internship assignments at BNL and is a unique
differentiator in most college applications.
Additionally, Dr. David Biersach has graciously offered to
mentor 2-3 Sayville students looking to integrate scientific computing in their
high school research class projects. Nearly all competition-level research
projects will greatly benefit from the integration of advanced statistics,
graphics, and simulation/modelling. Computational mathematics is the
cornerstone of modern science research at national laboratories. More information
can be found at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computational_Mathematics
As part of the Scientific Computing Seminar Program, Brookhaven National Laboratory will host two Colloquia, one in the fall for students to meet scientists and one in the spring, where students will present the work they completed throughout the year. At the spring Colloquia, BNL scientists will interview students on their projects and determine whether students are interested in taking more advanced classes at BNL in the summer (no charge) and/or participate in a six-week Internship Program.
This
opportunity is for the serious student who would like to learn more about this
potential career pathway and should not be viewed as a “Club”. The Workforce
Development Task Force at BNL has identified scientific computing as one of the
most critical subject areas that students who have a passion for math, science,
and computing, need to be introduced to prior to college in order to prepare
them for jobs that are presently difficult to fill with newly graduated
American college students.
In order to accept this invitation, please complete and submit the Google form (Link Below) to Mr. Caskey. No Later than Wednesday September 27th, 2017. Please do not delay
Scientific Computing Seminar Application (
NOTE: The Scientific Computing Seminar
will be taken seriously for participation and attendance to both the
instructional classes each week and the two Colloquia that will take place at
BNL. It is understood that at times, a student will not be able to attend a
seminar, but that serious effort will be made to attend each session.
If
you have any questions please feel free to contact Mr. Caskey if you have any
questions regarding the program. This Information
can also be found on Mr.Caskey’s website through the BNL link located in the
left panel.
