When researching a social issue within a particular country, the following databases will be great sources of information. (You may want to print this page before clicking on link to the VRC below)

Under History and Geography on left side scroll down and select
SIRS Knowledge Source.

  • At the home page, go to the right side and see Your 'Top Ten' leading issues. Click on 'More Issues' below the boxes.
  • Link to articles from this list of topics. SIRS Knowledge Source

Another great resource is elibrary. It's located in the same column a few lines above SIRS.
  • Type your issue into the search box.For many of the issues you'll be researching, eLibrary has a special feature that allows you to Expand this Research Topic box.
  • Scrolling down, select from links related to your topic.
A third database that will also be quite helpful to you is ProQuest K12.
While the results will contain texts that are more complex than the first two databases, this tool is a bit more user friendly in that it better recognizes search terms typed together for example - "Water Scarcity in Africa" or "Pollution In China". Be sure to look at the related searches for help selecting what may be an even more precise way to search your terms!

Also located within the Virtual Reference Collection (VRC)
use the databases below for gov't data, maps, photographs and statistics about your country.

Cultural Grams
- also located under the History and Geography column within the VRC, use this site to look at "detailed cultural information on over 200 countries."
  • Type in your country or select region from colored map
  • See statistics and development data on right, as well as links to societal info such as government & economy on left.
  • Links to photographs can be found on the right
CIA World Factbook- also under History and Geo, this is a great tool for finding facts about your particular country.

  • Use the pull down menu on the right to select your country. See photographs in the middle of the page for adding visuals to project.
  • Scroll down to select links to country data.

World Atlas - Also called World Geography & Culture Online, this database offers a statistical overview of, as well as country profiles for social issues relating to you country.
  • Select a country from the pull down menu on left. Select Go.
  • Now select from the Country Menu on left to see options.
*Note by selecting Society you can then see choices such as Human Rts or Status of Women or Living Conditions all important issues which may be just what you've elected to research.

Remember articles found within these databases, as with all the databases with the VRC, will include citation information for you. It will usually be located at the end of each article, but in some cases you may have to look for a link to Citation Information.
