Online Resources

General searching guidelines

  • Use the Virtual Reference Collection (www.esboces.org/sls/vrc.cfm) to find accurate and timely information in online encyclopedias, databases and periodicals.  The sign in (sayville) and password (shs123) are the same for all the databases accessed through the VRC.
  • Take note of the reliability of the websites.  Can anyone change or delete information at the site (wikis)? Is there contact information?  Is their bias presented?  Who is the author of the website?
  • Use quotes for phrases such as “Long Island” or “Astor Family” to get more precise results.
